Sixteen

For once we were not all over one another when it was time for bed. I went straight into the bathroom, left my hair in braids, and brushed my teeth. I changed into a T-shirt and shorts before returning to our bedroom. Galen was already in bed. He was shirtless—he slept hot, so that wasn’t changing despite the events of the day—but there was no flirty smile on his face when I joined him.

I made a big show of getting comfortable, arranging my pillows, and when I finally looked at him, he was watching me with indecipherable eyes.

“This is awkward,” I admitted.

He chuckled. “It’s a little weird.” He reached over and rubbed the back of my neck. “We’re okay, and I bet we’ll feel pretty close to normal tomorrow morning.”

“Yeah.”

“No sex, though.” He just threw it out there. “I don’t care how much you want me, we need a quiet, relaxing night.”

I pressed my lips together to keep from laughing, but it didn’t work.

“I’m serious,” Galen insisted, getting into the spirit of the game. “You are going to have to struggle against your baser urges and keep yourself from touching me for a change. I know it will be difficult, but we need a break after this afternoon.”

“You’re a funny guy,” I said when I’d recovered.

“I am nothing if not hilarious,” he agreed.

I rested my head against his shoulder. “I’m exhausted and a little afraid.”

“I know.” He rested his cheek against my forehead. “I’m right there with you, but you recognized we were in trouble once and saved us. If it were to happen again, I have no doubt you would save us again.”

I took his hand into my lap and traced his fingers. “What do you think about what Booker said? About the ancient cupid?”

Galen lifted one shoulder into a shrug. “It’s interesting, but Steve is finding a compound in people’s blood. That suggests a spell.”

“Unless the original cupids were casting spells.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe their magic worked differently back then. Perhaps mood enhancement wasn’t ingrained in them, but they had to work to guarantee an outcome. Maybe the magic evolved over time.”

“That actually makes sense.”

“I’m a genius,” I readily agreed.

He chuckled. “Well, I’m not opposed to it being an older cupid,” he said when he’d sobered. “But who could that possibly be?”

“I don’t know.”

He held me tight for another minute and then let go. “So, some ground rules for sleeping this evening,” he started.

My mouth fell open. “You’re putting ground rules in place for sleeping?”

“I am. You can’t paw me, Hadley. I know you’re going to want to—I mean, look at this body—but you must refrain.” He wiggled his torso in such a way it was impossible not to find him adorable. “We both need our rest,” he insisted.

“Yes, I’m going to need my rest for the next week if you keep this up,” I said.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Galen countered as he flopped back against the pillows. “One night will suffice for both of us.”

“I don’t want to cut our rest short,” I argued.
